About Us

Lawn Cottage is in the pretty Dorset village of Stour Row, only three miles south west of Shaftesbury in the Blackmore Vale – Thomas Hardy's 'Vale of Little Dairies'. The three guest rooms are lovely, cosy and comfortable. In the winter, guests often prefer breakfast in the kitchen near the warmth of the AGA.

The front lawn has recently been converted to raised vegetable beds that now produce lovely beans, potatoes, tomatoes and herbs in season. There is a gate from the garden to the fields behind which is Duncliffe Wood, 250 acres of Woodland Trust woodland full of lovely walks and, in the early Spring, bursting with primroses and violets and later filled with bluebells and foxgloves.

The delightful market town of Shaftesbury is famous for Gold Hill that featured in the Hovis advert. Within half an hour are the lovely towns of Sherborne (with the Abbey, Old and New Castles) Wincanton (with antique shops and the National Hunt Racecourse) Blandford, famous for its Georgian houses, Dorchester (Thomas Hardy), Wilton and Salisbury. The lovely Wilton House, Longleat and Sherborne Castle are within half an hour as are the stunning National Trust houses of Stourhead and Kingston Lacey.

Dorset is a delightful county to explore with a wealth of villages and towns, churches and gardens, walks and pubs and ancient hill forts. Its isolation from any motorways and its small lanes to travel through somehow makes it unique.

There are books of walks at Lawn Cottage and Mrs Watkins is happy to recommend days out.

Lawn Cottage is ideally located as an idyllic bed and breakfast near the premier independent schools in Dorset; the B&B near Clayesmore School, Hanford School, Port Regis School, St Mary’s School.
